Interior Designer

The Interior Designer (Construction) position requires the application of specialized knowledge in interior design principles to plan, design, and coordinate interior spaces for construction projects. The position involves preparing detailed construction documents, specifying materials and finishes, coordinating with architects, engineers, and contractors, and ensuring interior design work complies with applicable building codes, safety standards, and project requirements. The role requires a bachelor’s degree in a specific specialty related to interior design.

Job Responsibilities:

• Develop interior design concepts, layouts, and space plans based on architectural constraints, building systems, and project requirements.

• Prepare detailed interior construction drawings, including floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, finish plans, elevations, details, and schedules.

• Coordinate interior design documents with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings to ensure constructability and compliance.

• Select, evaluate, and specify interior materials, finishes, fixtures, furnishings, and equipment in accordance with design standards and budgets.

• Review shop drawings, product submittals, and samples to ensure conformity with design intent and construction documents.

• Conduct site visits during construction to verify proper installation of interior design elements and resolve design-related issues.

• Collaborate with architects, engineers, project managers, contractors, and subcontractors to address design coordination issues.

• Ensure interior designs comply with applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, fire and life-safety standards, and project specifications.

• Prepare written documentation, reports, and revisions related to design development and construction coordination.

• Assist with punch lists and final inspections to ensure interior work meets quality and design standards.

Job Requirements:

• Knowledge of interior design principles, including space planning, ergonomics, materials, finishes, and building systems.

• Understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and coordination related to interior build-out and finishing work.

• Familiarity with building codes, accessibility standards, and safety regulations applicable to interior construction.

• Ability to interpret and integrate architectural and engineering drawings into interior design solutions.

• Proficiency in industry-standard design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or similar drafting and modeling tools.

• Ability to analyze design and construction challenges and develop practical, code-compliant solutions.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare documentation and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.

• Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in drawings, specifications, and material selections.

• Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines within a construction project environment.

Education and Experience 

Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a closely related field is required, with two to five (2–5) years of progressively responsible experience in interior design for construction or related projects.
