Carpenter Apprentice - GPSI

Job Description:

The Carpenter Apprentice works alongside a Carpenter Journey Worker for general carpentry and assorted duties necessary to maintain, repair, or upgrade of housing facilities, structures, and utilities. The carpenter apprentice will be performing service call and preventative maintenance of Military Housing facilities which will require direct communications with Military Housing residents, Government and company quality inspectors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to diagnose system problems and provide necessary repair actions.

  • Employee will be required interact with the residents to determine the root cause of the problem and inform them of the corrective actions being taken.

  • This position utilizes written service orders or individual work orders to identify the type of problem, and location for the required service. The employee is required to complete the service or work order paper work once the work is completed and to turn them into the service desk at the end of the shift. If issues arise during the service the employee will communicate via cell phone to the service desk for further direction.

  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance actions that are required by this contract.

  • Performs maintenance and repair work such as foundations, interior walls, exterior walls, and all types of exterior siding, all floor covering, subfloors, structural members, roofs, ceiling paneling, drywall systems, and all other building components as necessary; but not limited to the removal, maintenance, repair and/or replacement of windows, doors, hardware, kitchen equipment, faucets, lighting fixtures, and electrical systems, including interior cabinetry, and its components.

  • Works both inside and outside of buildings and structures to perform all types of rough and finish carpentry.

  • Constructs, repairs modifies and maintains buildings, parts of buildings, sheds, docks, and temporary structures.

  • Repairs or builds shelves crates, benches, furniture and cabinets.

  • Measures, lays out, or machine cuts wood, tile, plastics and other materials.

  • Uses a variety of hand tools, portable power tools and standard measuring instruments.

  • Makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work.

  • Interprets building plans and working drawings to determine system installation or for diagnosing operating problems. Inspects drawings and the structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided during repair and to prevent structural code violations during repair.

  • Ensures full compliance and displays full understanding with all Federal and Local building codes as they pertain to this trade.

  • Assist other trades and craft personnel in their daily operations.

  • Constructs and/or maintains signs, monuments, set-in-place flagpoles, historical sites, gravesites, recreational sites and preserved artifacts.

  • Will be scheduled for an on-call status periodically with other technicians to respond to call-outs after normal working hours as needed.

  • Performs other related work as assigned.

In addition, as it relates to the Registered Apprenticeship Program:

  • Will be partnered with a journey worker throughout the course of the apprenticeship program until all On-the-Job Training hours are completed as specified in the apprenticeship standards.

  • Complete Related Technical Instruction courses specific to the trade that is in line with apprenticeship program standards.

  • Maintain communication between supervisor, manager, human resources department and the Related Technical Instruction provider

Job Educational, Experiences and Professional Associations Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Ability to obtain access to U.S. Government Installations through the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS)

As it relates to the Registered Apprenticeship Program:

  • Eligible to work within the U.S.

  • Other qualifications as required by the Related Technical Instruction providers.

 

Work Conditions:

 

The employee is regularly required to talk and hear to understand instructions, provide information and respond to safety warnings. Work conditions require the employee to stand; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; taste or smell; and work on scaffolding and ladders. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 35 pounds without assistance and lift and/or move heavier objects with assistance.
