Safety Engineer

 

Job Summary:

The Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations through rigorous inspections, hazard assessments, and enforcement of safety protocols across all project sites. This role oversees hazardous materials management, emergency preparedness, subcontractor compliance, and conducts detailed incident investigations with corrective action follow-through. Additionally, the Safety Engineer leads safety training, coordinates with project stakeholders, and supports a proactive safety culture through continuous monitoring and risk-based improvements.

Essential Duties & Job Functions:

  • Conducts regular safety inspections of job sites, equipment, and materials to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

  • Identifies workplace hazards and takes immediate action to correct unsafe conditions or practices.

  • Monitors first aid supplies and medical compliance; provides on-site care when needed.

  • Oversees hazardous materials handling and ensures proper safety controls are in place.

  • Inspects employee tools and equipment, removing any items that do not meet safety standards.

  • Ensures subcontractors follow safety requirements through regular site checks and enforcement actions.

  • Leads daily safety meetings to discuss work hazards and prevention strategies with crews.

  • Supports the Project Manager in applying safety regulations and company safety programs.

  • Coordinates emergency response, fire prevention, and first aid programs; serves as the site Emergency Coordinator.

  • Conducts safety training and participates in pre-construction, kickoff, and progress meetings.

  • Investigates accidents and near-misses, prepares reports, and ensures corrective actions are taken.

  • Maintains safety records, prepares reports, and tracks safety issues until resolved.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates effective and proficient skills in both oral and written communication.

  • Possesses organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Skilled in active listening, hazard recognition, and problem-solving in high-risk environments.

  • Has effective teamwork and collaborative skills, especially in multidisciplinary project settings.

  • Demonstrates strong observational and analytical abilities to assess workplace safety conditions.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Knowledge of federal and local safety regulations, such as OSHA, NFPA, and ANSI standards.

  • Understanding of construction safety practices, industrial hygiene, and environmental health considerations.

  • Ability to prepare detailed reports and deliver presentations to management and field personnel.

Education and Certificates:

Applicants must have a minimum of a four-year degree from an accredited university in Safety and Health, Occupational Safety, or a closely related discipline. Candidates should also be in pursuit of professional certifications through OSHA and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), including:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Training in General Industry and Construction

  • Safety Trained Supervisor (STS)

  • Construction Safety and Health Technician (CHST)​​
